New Book - FAMOUS ENOUGH: A HOLLYWOOD MEMOIR

We are happy to announce the forthcoming publication of FAMOUS ENOUGH: A HOLLYWOOD MEMOIR by Diane McBain and Michael Gregg Michaud.

FAMOUS ENOUGH: A HOLLYWOOD MEMOIR by Diane McBain and Michael Gregg Michaud

Diane McBain and I first met on a life-changing USO tour visiting our troops in Vietnam in 1966. We shared the horrors of war meeting our very grateful servicemen in the field and in hospitals. Although our tour of duty would end after two weeks, our friendship would endure for nearly half a century. As well as I know Diane, I was still surprised by the many challenges she faced throughout her life, and her willingness to adapt to life’s adversities. She is a woman with strong beliefs and the ability to survive and thrive. She played the fame game with compassion and a quiet elegance. This is a book about the real Hollywood, the story of an actress who saw it from the top and from the bottom, told with truth, humility and lots of humor. I couldn’t put the book down.  — Tippi Hedren

Marilyn Monroe

THE LIFE, TIMES, & FILMS OF MARILYN MONROE by Gary Vitacco-Robles has been receiving some great reviews; the most recent being in the May issue of Rage Magazine.

Here is what reviewer Bill Biss from Rage, had to say:

Robles brings a unique perspective to his biography of Monroe with the extensively detailed account of not only her fascinating and tumultuous life but by presenting a psychological perspective of the many facets of her personality. What sets this book apart is his ability to shed a new light on her humanity and psyche to bring forth a balanced view of the person inside. “Icon” is tribute to the reality of her work, heartache and strengths that coincide with the wonder and complexity of the truly iconic star. Available now.

New Book - INTERVIEWS TOO SHOCKING TO PRINT!

We are pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of INTERVIEWS TOO SHOCKING TO PRINT! by Justin Humphreys.

INTERVIEWS TOO SHOCKING TO PRINT! by Justin Humphreys

Interviews Too Shocking to Print! collects conversations with some of horror and science fiction cinema's finest directors and writers, along with other outstanding talents. The interviewees' films range from the mightiest blockbusters to esoteric drive-in arcana, but they are united by the imagination. Their creations represent some of the freshest, most popular, vital, and inventive works in fantastic filmmaking.

            The interviewees:
            - Alan Ball- The author of American Beauty, whose True Blood has become a favorite of vampire lovers everywhere.
            - Wah Chang- The sculptor and multi-talented f/x genius who created the monstrous menageries of “Star Trek,” “The Outer Limits,” and George Pal’s films, among many others.
             - William Finley- The gangly, unforgettable cult star who essayed the title role in Brian De Palma’s Phantom of the Paradise and headlined Sisters, Eaten Alive, and other cult classics.
            - Jack Fisk- Now one of Hollywood’s top production designers (There Will Be Blood), Fisk cut his teeth crafting the eerily unforgettable worlds of Phantom of the Paradise, Messiah of Evil, and Carrie.
            - Gene Fowler, Jr.- Fritz Lang’s former editor, Fowler directed two minor masterpieces whose lurid titles barely hint at their high quality: I Was a Teenage Werewolf and I Married a Monster From Outer Space.
            - Chuck Griffith- A bizarre master screenwriter, Griffith wrote immortal low-budget favorites like The Little Shop of Horrors, A Bucket of Blood, Not of This Earth, and Death Race 2000.
             - Stewart Stern- The author of Rebel Without a Cause recalls writing the role of Mr. Kurtz for Boris Karloff in his television production of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.
            - Herbert Strock- Strock discusses the making of his psychotronic gems I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, How to Make a Monster, and The Crawling Hand.
            - William Tuttle- The head of MGM’s makeup department for decades and the first makeup artist to win an Academy Award, Tuttle’s make-up career stretched from Mark of the Vampire with Bela Lugosi and The Wizard of Oz  to Young Frankenstein’s zipper-neck monster.
            - Robert Wise- The director of two of the all-time most popular musicals– West Side Story and The Sound of Music– discusses his long and varied career, including editing Citizen Kane and directing the distinctly un-musical The Body Snatcher, The Haunting, Curse of the Cat People, and The Andromeda Strain.

Also included are several of Humphreys’s essays on the cinema of imagination.

Justin Humphreys is the author of Names You Never Remember, With Faces You Never Forget (also from BearManor) and the authorized biography of director/producer George Pal. A three-time Rondo Award nominee, he has sold over 130 articles, been quoted in magazines like The Virginia Quarterly Review, and interviewed for documentaries by the Starz Channel, Paramount, and others. He is also the Primary Research Editor of two-time Academy Award-winner Robert Skotak’s upcoming Retrospect magazine.

New Book - 100 Years of Brodies

We are pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of 100 YEARS OF BRODIES WITH HAL ROACH: THE JAUNTY JOURNEYS OF A HOLLYWOOD MOTION PICTURE AND TELEVISION PIONEER by Craig Calman.

100 YEARS OF BRODIES WITH HAL ROACH: THE JAUNTY JOURNEYS OF A HOLLYWOOD MOTION PICTURE AND TELEVISION PIONEER by Craig Calman

Little could the author have imagined, drawing a pencil sketch of The Boys as a mere teenager, that a few years later he’d actually be meeting Laurel & Hardy’s boss—that Genial Purveyor of Joy and Laughter—HAL ROACH—and even less could he have imagined all the adventures and Brodies that were yet to unspool.

No one can come close to duplicating the unique talents of James (”DOH!”) Finlayson, one of the great comics who worked at the Hal Roach Studios throughout the ’20s and ’30s, among so many other unforgettable performers.  The author never would have dared to attempt to portray Finlayson—until as an actor in 1990 he was cast to “recreate” Fin’s character in a General Motors silent comedy industrial short which would also star Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy!

One day this former comedy-crazed kid from San Diego would show this very film to none other than Mr. Hal Roach himself, whom he had first met in 1973 while a 20-year-old undergraduate of the UCLA Motion Picture/Television Department, and who was, years later, invited by Mr. Roach to stay in his home to help the 96-year-old prepare the script for his “come back comedy.”

This book contains a complete and detailed overview of Hal Roach’s career, from his arrival in Hollywood in 1912 during the earliest days of movie making, to the creation of a studio dedicated to the production of world-wide popular film comedies, to his pioneering work at the birth of the talkies and his virtual launching of the television industry in Hollywood twenty years after that, and on through the 100th year of his exuberantly productive life.

A STRANGE IDEA OF ENTERTAINMENT: CONVERSATIONS WITH TOM MCLOUGHLIN edited by Joseph Maddrey

Tom McLoughlin’s reel life began in 1957 at the age of seven, making 8mm movies in the back lots of MGM studios. He was a magician during the 50s, a rock musician in the 60s (opening for groups like The Doors), a mime in the 70s (studying in Paris with Marcel Marceau), and a writer (Emmy nominated for his work with Dick Van Dyke & Company). In the 1980s, Tom fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a filmmaker. He has directed more than 40 feature film and television projects, including Friday the 13th: Jason Lives and the Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated miniseries In a Child’s Name. Today he continues to pursue his eclectic passions, touring worldwide as the lead singer of the rock band The Sloths while preparing for postmortem appearances at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. This is the behind-the-scenes story of the strange business of creative obsession.... and one man's strange idea of entertainment.

New Book - GOLDEN DANUBE by Jules Verne

We are  happy to announce the publication of GOLDEN DANUBE by Jules Verne.

GOLDEN DANUBE by Jules Verne

Take a Trip Down the GOLDEN DANUBE

Jules Verne’s “Extraordinary Journeys” often used the travelogue mode, and here the author offers a voyage down the entire length of the Danube, from Germany to the Black Sea. However, rather than the placid “blue” Danube of classical conception, Verne offers one which is golden, in multiple ways.  Smugglers are operating along the river, with the police in pursuit, and the hero is a champion fisherman who is abducted and forced to prove his courage.

DESPERATELY SEEKING MARIE PREVOST by Richard Kirby

Desperately Seeking Marie Prevost takes a look back at the life and work of a beautiful, talented, yet ill-fated actress, who was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars of the 1920s.

Richard Kirby was born in York in 1964, and this is his second BearManor Media publication.

"I have looked for a book on Marie Prevost for a great many years and never found one, so I am thrilled that Richard Kirby has put pen to paper and written what I believe to be the first biography of this tragic star. I am a big fan of Richard’s work and I’m sure that fans of the silent screen will be just as pleased as I am to have this very special book in their collection.”
