Dave White Presents...

The following is news from our friends at Dave White Presents, which includes details of an interview with Robert L Mills, author of THE LAUGH MAKERS: A BEHIND-THE-SCENES TRIBUTE TO BOB HOPE'S INCREDIBLE GAG WRITERS.

THE LAUGH MAKERS: A BEHIND-THE-SCENES TRIBUTE TO BOB HOPE'S INCREDIBLE GAG WRITERS by Robert L. Mills, J.D.

TV Retro with June Lockhart, Jon Provost, and a Bob Hope Gag Writer on the next *Dave White Presents*!

If you know '60s TV, you certainly remember June Lockhart. After all, she was a TV Mom on both *Lassie* (1959-1964) and then *Lost in Space*(1965-1968) before starring in two seasons of *Petticoat Junction* (1968-1970). But those are only her three most famous roles.

In fact, June Lockhart has been in show business for 80 years now. Yes, 80 years. She first hit the stage with her parents in 1925 at the age of 8. She made her movie debut in a 1938 version of *A Christmas Carol* and was the first actress to win a Tony for Outstanding Performance by a Newcomer in 1948. After her run on hit series in the '60s, she's been a regular on *General Hospital* and now guests on shows like *Cold Case* and *Grey's Anatomy*. It's no wonder she has 2 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

So, when June joins Wes Britton for a lively and insightful conversation on the next DWP, you can bet the interview is chock-full of anecdotes that will take you behind the scenes of some memorable TV moments. But that's not all! Last October, NASA presented June Lockhart with their Exceptional Public Achievement Medal for outstanding talent for inspiring the public about space exploration. We'll tell you why and share the story of how June heard one of the songs her father wrote broadcast from space! In short, this is one interview no TV fan or space devotee should miss!

Now, when we say the next DWP goes retro, we mean that in more than one way. Looking over our archives, we realized we had some vintage features many newer listeners might have missed first time around. In honor of June Lockhart joining us, we went back to an interview Wes Britton conducted live with Jon Provost at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention first aired back in Oct. 2008. In one of our very early shows, Jon was plugging his new book, *Timmy's in the Well*. For our next show, we thought it would be fun for listeners to compare June and Jon's *Lassie* memories, and we don't mean shaggy dog stories! Well, we sort of do . . .

Want more? O.K.—we've long thought Dave White's May 2009 interview with gag writer Bob Mills was one of the most entertaining conversations we've ever offered. Why? Well, describing  Bob's book, *THE LAUGH MAKERS: A Behind-the-Scenes Tribute to Bob Hope's Incredible Gag Writers*, past DWP guest Shelley Berman said "At long last, a book that pays homage to television's unsung heroes -- those wit wizards who face a blank page every day and somehow manage to create something John Barrymore claimed was more difficult than dying: laughter. In his book, Bob Mills not only keeps the reader laughing, but --like a comedic

Houdini revealing his secrets --shows us how it's done. *The Laugh Makers* is a must-read for anyone even thinking about a career in comedy." Find out what Shelley was talking about when Bob Mills returns for a long overdue encore on DWP!

So TV Mom June Lockhart, one of her TV kids, and an engaging look into writing jokes for TV on the next *Dave White Presents*, Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, then 7:30 Pacific over--

New Book - Elephant

ELEPHANT: THE 12 THINGS I LEARNED WHEN I RAN FOR OFFICE by Miguel Ali

ELEPHANT: THE 12 THINGS I LEARNED WHEN I RAN FOR OFFICE by Miguel Ali

How does a political candidate go from scandal to frontrunner in less than five months?

"Elephant: The 12 Things I Learned When I Ran For Office" is a nonfiction memoir by Muhammad Ali Hasan (aka Miguel Ali), a political candidate who ran for Colorado's State House in 2008. It was a candidacy that started with a major scandal, plunging Hasan to the bottom of the polls, where he faced a 30 point deficit in May of 2008. But rather than drop out, Hasan fought. He knocked on over 20,000 doors throughout Colorado's Rocky Mountains. And by September of 2008, not only did Hasan roar back, vaulting himself as the frontrunner of the race, he also kept a diary of all the things he learned as he worked to not only win a race, but regain his reputation. "Elephant" is his diary.

We are about to publish HOLLYWOOD'S MADE-TO-ORDER PUNKS, PART 2 by Richard Roat.

HOLLYWOOD'S MADE-TO-ORDER PUNKS, PART 2 by Richard Roat

A Pictorial History of:
The Dead End Kids
Little Tough Guys
East Side Kids
and
The Bowery Boys

From Richard Roat:

Back in 1964 when I was 12 years old I saw my first Dead End Kids film; the title of the film was Crime School. After watching it I learned all about the Dead End Kids and their lives on and off the big screen.

Over the past 40 years, I became friends with many of the actors who portrayed the kids, and the actors who worked with them in their films. I have had the great pleasure of becoming friends with Billy Halop, Huntz Hall, Gabe Dell, Bernard Punsly, Billy Benedict, Bennie Bartlett, Stanley Clements, Pepe Hern, Joe Turkel, Eugene Francis, Johnny Duncan, David Gorcey, Jimmy McCallon, Frankie Thomas, Eddie Le Roy, Bill Lawrence and Keye Luke. My greatest joy is my friendship over the past 30 years with Mendie Koenig (Mendie was a dear “Dead End Kids” friend-I think of him often) Dick Chandlee, Johnny Duncan and Eugene Francis.

I have collected thousands of 8x10 stills, countless posters, lobby cards and anything I can find that has to do with the Dead End Kids. I hope you the reader will enjoy your travels as you thumb thru the pages and look at the pictures that I have collected.

– Richard Roat

About the Author
Richard Roat lives in Tinley Park, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, with his wife Mary and daughter Jenny. Richard retired in 2012 after many years working at a cemetery as a groundsman/gravedigger.

Dave White Presents...

Below you will find news from our friends at Dave White Presents, which includes an appearance by Michael Hoey, author of 'Elvis's Favorite Director.'

ELVIS' FAVORITE DIRECTOR: THE AMAZING 52-YEAR CAREER OF NORMAN TAUROG (SOFTCOVER) by Michael A. Hoey

The Everly Brothers, The Chapin Sisters, Mad Magazine, and Elvis's Favorite Director on the Next *Dave White Presents*!

From 1957 on, The Everly Brothers were influential harmonizers of rockabilly hits like "Bye Bye Love," "Cathy's Clown," "Till I Kissed You," "When Will I Be Loved," and "All I Have to do is Dream." An indication of their importance was seen last year when three different tribute albums were released with new versions of the songs of Don and Phil Everly, all issued before Phil's untimely death on Jan. 3, 2014.

One of these tributes, *A Date With The Everly Brothers*, was recorded by the Chapin Sisters in their attempt to capture the spirit and flavor of the songs they've loved for a lifetime. Abigail and Lily Chapin (daughters of folksinger Tom and nieces of the late, great Harry Chapin) are no slouches as sibling harmonizers themselves. They also know how to craft their own interpretations of the classics. You'll hear their takes on two Everly tunes and some good stories on the Next *Dave White Presents* when Lily Chapin stops by to talk about their new album. As you'll hear, *A Date With The Everly Brothers* started out as an attempt to simply learn from the masters, but it turned out to be so much more.

In 1932, Norman Taurog became the youngest director to win an Academy Award. That title still holds. he directed 180 films starring everyone from Maurice Chevalier and Carole Lombard, to W.C. Fields and Bing Crosby, to Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy (who won an Oscar for his performance as Father Flanagan in Taurog’s *Boys Town*), to Judy Garland, Mario Lanza, Cary Grant, six movies with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, and his nine films with Elvis Presley.

To explore the life and career of  Norman Taurog, you can't do better than author, editor, director, and producer Michael Hoey who worked closely with Taurog during the last six years and eight films of his career. So Hoey's *Elvis' Favorite Director: The Amazing 52-Year Career of Norman Taurog* is more than your typical film biography. It's full of first-hand memories of  Taurog, Elvis, and other filmmakers told by a man who was there. Get an insider's peek into this anecdote-filled book when Hoey joins Dave White to remember movies like *Blue Hawaii* and *Live a Little, Love a Little*.

What, me worry?"

It all began in 1952 when *EC Comics* publisher Bill Gaines and editor Harvey Kurtzman launched *Mad* as a comic book.  Then came 1956 and things changed dramatically when editor Al Feldstein took the helm. Until he retired in 1984, it was Felstein who converted the comic into a magazine, hired and nurtured the "Usual Gang of Idiots" like  Don Martin, Sergio Aragones, and Mort Drucker, and made Alfred E. Neuman a national icon.

Now, *Feldstein: The Mad Life and Fantastic Art of Al Feldstein!* by Grant Geissman is a spectacular coffee table tribute to Feldstein. It includes  400 plus  over-sized pages of comic art, comic covers, photos, and the story of the man who was there from the days when comics were just beginning their cultural influence. On the next *Dave White Presents*, Geissman joins Wes Britton to remember the days when comic books were seen as moral threats to America's youth, explains why *Mad* was more than the sum of its parts, and why Al Feldstein deserves an important place in our pop culture history!

How's that for variety? Rockabilly, classic films, and classic humor on the next *Dave White Presents*, Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, then 7:30 Pacific over--
