News from our friends... Dave White Presents....

"Dave White Presents" Variety with a capital V with rock from Willie Nile, Adventures in Hollywood, and Traveling on the Bayou with TV's Swamp People!

Since 1980, critics have consistently used adjectives like "infectious," "exuberant," "charismatic," and "thrilling" to describe the rocking music of Willie Nile. In 1999, his Beautiful Wreck of the World was chosen as one of the Top Ten Albums of the Year by Billboard, The Village Voice and Stereo Review. His fans have included Pete Townshend and Lucinda Williams. In recent years, he's issued highly praised albums like The Innocent Ones and, this month, the very exciting American Ride.

THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF TV SPIES by Wesley Britton

On Tues. July 2, Willie joins [BearManor author] Wes Britton to talk about his career, his hot new music, and tells some stories about folks like Springsteen and Ringo Starr. If you're a Beatles fan, you don't want to miss Willie's poignant memories of John Lennon's final days when John borrowed some of Willie's guitar strings to record Double Fantasy. What Willie shared literally took Wes Britton's breath away. Trust us, trust us—you'll love the music when you discover this seriously underappreciated singer, guitarist, and songwriter!

Then, "Dave White Presents" [BearManor author] Bob Koster, who's been working in Hollywood for 35 years mainly in the production department as an Assistant Director and a Unit Production Manager. This means Bob has a unique insider's perspective on the history of cinema which he shares in his new book from Bear Manor Media, Adventures in Hollywood: A memoir.

ADVENTURES IN HOLLYWOOD: A MEMOIR by Bob Koster

Joining Dave White for an entertaining and laugh-filled conversation, Koster doesn't give you the usual name-dropping interview about who he worked with and when. Instead, Koster talks about how production departments operate, the differences between Hollywood and East Coast projects, and how location shooting can be challenging in ways you might not expect. In short, Bob takes you behind the scenes to show how all the moving parts come together and how they've changed over the decades.

Next, for the past four seasons, the Discovery Channel has had a surprise hit called Swamp People. The documentary series follows the Landry family and their contemporaries who live off the bayou and hunt gators for a living. On any given episode, we see Troy Landry and the "Swamp People" out in their specialized boats showing viewers that hunting gators is a very different thing than shooting deer, that the swamp is never a predictable place to navigate, and the residents of the area are very proud of their very old traditions.

Now, a tie-in album has been issued with a bayou theme featuring the music of Jerry Reed, Tony Joe White, the Neville Brothers, Hank Williams, Buckwheat Zydeco, and other performers who claim Louisiana as their home.    The Executive Producer for the project, Pete Elkins, comes to DWP to talk about both the TV show and the album, and you'll be amazed to learn how interesting gator hunting can be!

So the next DWP is as "predictably unpredictable" as you can get on Tuesday, July 2 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, then 7:30 Pacific over--

You can pre-record the show at Digital Audio Recording (DAR)--

On Wed.  July 3, the 90 minute show will be available as a podcast, mp3 download, from itunes, through TEVO and Sticher.com, or on the player at--

www.audioentertainment.org/dwp

Confirmed guests coming up this summer: Dan Brewer (Grand Funk Railroad), Joe Butler (The Lovin' Spoonful), Genya Ravan (Ten Wheel Drive), and new music from a hot trio called Beach Day! Stay tuned—

Book of the Week - My Hit Parade

The Book of the Week this time is MY HIT PARADE... AND A FEW MISSES by Russell Arms.

MY HIT PARADE... AND A FEW MISSES by Russell Arms

Russell Arms is probably best known for his six-year stint on the famous Your Hit Parade TV show, but he also was active in many other theatrical fields. After graduating from the Pasadena Playhouse he was signed to a contract by Warner Bros. Studios were he made several important pictures, including The Man Who Came to Dinner, Captains of the Clouds, and By the Light of the Silvery Moon. He also free-lanced at other studios and, in all, appeared in over 20 movies, including several Westerns.

Deciding to try his luck in New York he discovered he had a singing voice which he immediately put to good use with his own radio show on WNEW as well as on a TV show, School Days, on the Dumont network. His next step was a national game show, Chance of a Lifetime, on ABC where he stayed for over a year. From there it was on to CBS for The 54th St. Revue, another national TV offering which lasted for over a year.

The big break came shortly after that by his signing with the Hit Parade and that opened up a whole world of opportunities, including recordings, night clubs, fairs, personal appearances, and many guest spots on TV (including the Ed Sullivan Show with his hit record, “Cinco Robles”), as well as dinner and summer theaters all over the country (including versions of Can Can, Bells Are Ringing, 1776, Irma LaDouce, No, No, Nanette, with the incomparable Martha Raye!), and many others both musical and non-musical.

Russ also got involved with MC’ing beauty pageants and fashion shows. He staged and MC’d the Miss World-USA Pageant for three years and added music to the fashion shows by singing to the models as they paraded the runway.

Carole Lombard

Lots of people have been asking me (Michelle) for an update on the Carole Lombard book I am currently working on.  Well I am glad to say that I am finished the main bulk of research and I am now working on the writing itself.  I  have completed 25,000 words and have approximately 55,000 left to go, but word by word the book is growing bigger and bigger each day.

So far I have uncovered lots of interesting information about the wonderful Miss Lombard, including many, many details about her family's history; their life in Fort Wayne; Carole's early childhood etc. etc.  I have also gained access to records from one of the producers she worked with; her agent; the FBI investigation into her death; hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles; and many interviews with the great lady herself.

I am thoroughly enjoying writing and researching this book.  I spent all last year working on a book about Hollywood Scandals so to suddenly go from that to Carole is like a breath of fresh air.  She really was an amazing lady: strong; bold; knew what she wanted; but above all, sincere, happy and with a beautiful heart.  She is teaching me lots about the way you should live your life, without fear and with good cheer, and I hope that through this book, others will get to see that too.

I am hoping for the book to be finished by the end of the year, ready for a Spring/Summer 2014 publication date.  Until then, thanks for all your support and if you have any rare stories, documents or photos you'd like to share, please feel free to get in touch!  Thanks! - Michelle Morgan.

We are proud to announce the forthcoming publication of DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN FOREMAN by Richard Kirby.

DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN FOREMAN by Richard Kirby

Desperately Seeking Susan Foreman is a very different Doctor Who book. Richard Kirby’s personal look back at fifty years of time travel is built around his quest to obtain a signed photograph from every living female companion—from Carole Ann Ford’s character, who inspired the book’s title, right through to the present day and the Doctor’s current sidekick, Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman).

Reviews of Richard’s writing style have varied from “casual” and “easy to read” through to “quirky”, and fans of the program have described Desperately Seeking Susan Foreman as “exhilarating”, “first class”, “lovingly researched” and “like discovering Doctor Who all over again.”

So why not take a gentle stroll down memory lane? There’s something in this book for Doctor Who fans of every age: you’ll hopefully learn facts you never knew—and equally importantly, you’ll discover if Richard actually found Susan Foreman!

Book of the Week - The Gripes of Rapp

THE GRIPES OF RAPP: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE BICKERSONS' CREATOR, PHILIP RAPP by Ben Ohmart

This week's featured book is the extraordinary THE GRIPES OF RAPP: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE BICKERSONS' CREATOR, PHILIP RAPP by our very own, Ben Ohmart.

Philip Rapp, creator of the Bickersons, was radio's greatest comedy writer.  Long time writer for Baby Snooks and Eddie Cantor, Rapp's distinctive wit has charmed audiences for over seven decades.  He was one of Hollywood's highest paid script writers, using his gift of the gag to write films for Danny Kaye, best-selling albums for Don Ameche and Frances Langford, and classic television series like Topper and I Married Joan.  He wrote the final TV series for Joan Davis, and for the Marx Brothers, and influenced everything from The Honeymooners to Married with Children, with his timeless marital masterpiece, the Bickersons.

Culled directly from the Philip Rapp files, this premiere biography of one of Hollywood's greats also showcases a vast chunk of Rapp's best scripts, jokes and writings.  Teaming with rare photos and interviews with family and friends, Ohmart's detailed work boldly illustrates a one of a kind talent that will never come this way again.

"Quarrels between man and woman are nothing new, and could be dull, but they take on freshness and merriment extraordinaire in the hands of Philip Rapp." - Goodman Ace, American Humorist.

"Gripes of Rapp is a must read for anyone who has visions of being a comedy writer." - Sam Locke, Award Winning Comedy Writer.

"Anything you want to know about comedy writing and much more." - Roger Corman.

New Audio Book - Another Nice Mess

We have recently published ANOTHER NICE MESS: THE LAUREL & HARDY STORY (AUDIO BOOK) by Raymond Valinoti, narrated by Jack de Golia.

ANOTHER NICE MESS: THE LAUREL & HARDY STORY (AUDIO BOOK) by Raymond Valinoti, narrated by Jack de Golia

This is the audiobook version of Another Nice Mess, narrated by Jack de Golia.

This audio book is a downloadable 250 MB file in MP3 format. After you check out, we'll provide instructions on how to download this product.

Arguably the greatest comedy duo in show business history, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy delighted filmgoers and theatregoers for over thirty years. The public not only found Laurel's serene simpleton and Hardy's pompous buffoon hilarious, but they also thought of them as friends. Laurel and Hardy may have been nitwits, but they were loveable nitwits.

Another Nice Mess: The Laurel and Hardy Story explores the lives and careers of Laurel and Hardy. The book examines how the comedians teamed up and it explains why, nearly half a century after their deaths, their films continue to enchant people all over the world.

Raymond Valinoti, Jr.. is a resident of Berkeley Heights, NJ. He has a Master's in Library Science from Rutgers University and is a freelance researcher. His articles on film have been published in the magazines Midnight Marquee and Films of the Golden Age. He also writes film reviews for an online news publication, The Alternative Press.

New Book - Irene Manning

We are pleased to announce the publication of IRENE MANNING: THE REBELLIOUS PRIMA DONNA by Gene Arceri.

IRENE MANNING: THE REBELLIOUS PRIMA DONNA by Gene Arceri

Who was Irene Manning? She was a beautiful, talented, wilful, and rebellious woman who performed in every field of entertainment . Within this musical biography is revealed her thirty-two year friendship with the author, Gene Arceri. She trained for Grand Opera, but became a star in musical comedy on Broadway, London and motion pictures, starring opposite James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and Dennis Morgan. Radio, television, and night clubs were also venues for her varied talents.

From cowboys, (Gene Autry); to presidents, (Ronald Reagan); from legendary musicians, (Glenn Miller), to immortal composers, (Kern, Lerner and Loewe), this is an archival story for reference and theatrical history; the genesis of theatrical history.

Several of the most important treasures of the book include Guy Bolton's personal letters, which are printed here for the first time; concerning the genesis of his legendary smash hit musical still playing on Broadway, "Anything Goes". They present a remarkable study of the creative process behind an endearing, decades old musical produced on stage throughout the West End London, Manhattan, New York and provinces.

NEW BOOK - 200 MILLION MILES TO EARTH

We are pleased to announce the publication of 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH by Randall D. Larson, edited by Philip J. Riley.

20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH by Randall D. Larson, edited by Philip J. Riley

A Philip J. Riley's NightMare Series volume.
Commentary and “About the Author” Henry Slesar
by Randall D. Larson - edited by Philip J. Riley

The clouds of yellow dust rolled and swirled and whistled in agonized motion, and their sound obscured the needle-thin cries of men in anguish. The pain had come upon them suddenly, pain that gripped their chests like the giant talons of some rapacious bird, pain that sent them scurrying, reeling, stumbling towards the silvery object that
stood half-buried in the volatile sands. Some were to make the ship in time; others were to die later. One was to live to see the horror of the dust-shrouded planet transplanted to the world of his birth, twenty million miles away. The Ymir, as the creature was named by Forrest
J Ackerman is one of Ray Harryhausen's best remembered stop motion creations.

Originally published as an Amazing Stories special edition.

Steve Massa

LAME BRAINS & LUNATICS: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE FORGOTTEN OF SILENT COMEDY by Steve Massa

LAME BRAINS & LUNATICS: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE FORGOTTEN OF SILENT COMEDY by Steve Massa has been given an awesome review on the Pretty Clever Films website.

Here is a little taster:

"Lame Brains and Lunatics is one way a very easy read and in another way a challenging one. Massa’s passion for his topic makes the pages fly by in a peppy, conversational way. It’s as if you’ve met the author at a cocktail party and expressed your love for Chaplinkeatonlloyd and then find your self treated to an enthusiastic list of  ”if you like this then you must see that.” The depth of knowledge is dazzling, but always delivered in a concise and clear way. Reading this book becomes challenging because you’ll find yourself putting it down after every other paragraph to dash to Google and find out where you can see the work of these silent clowns you’ve never heard of before. Fortunately, Lame Brains and Lunatics comes complete with a detailed selected filmography and a meticulous list of sources to help you along."

Author of the Week - Shirley Lee Ames

This week's featured author is Shirley Lee Ames, author of 'Seeing Stars: Memoirs of a Freelance Celebrity Articles Writer.'

SEEING STARS: MEMOIRS OF A FREELANCE CELEBRITY ARTICLES WRITER by Shirley Lee Ames

1) What is your background and why did you decide to become a writer?
I always liked putting things into words. I wrote poetry as a teenager. Then, later on, I began writing personal experience articles (about things like camping, sleeping in our backyard during hot nights, berry picking on a trip to Washington state, etc.) to sell to The Christian Science Monitor's Youth Section for $2.75 and $3.00. I went on to writing personality profiles, travel, and business articles for a wide variety of magazines. I specialized in interviewing famous celebrities as well as writing teenage and children's fiction stories and non-fiction articles for a number of young people's publications.

2) What book have you written for BearManor, and what is it about?
My book is SEEING STARS: Memoirs of a Freelance Celebrity Articles Writer, which tells in some detail about my experiences with nearly 100 well-known actors, actresses, and book authors.

3) Why did you choose those particular subjects?

I had files and personal experiences with all of those people and wanted to tell about them.

4) How long did it take you to write, and did you find it an easy task?

Over the years I had been writing a chapter or two every once in a while with the thought of eventually writing a book. When I finally had more time on my hands, I decided to go ahead and complete it whether or not I ever found a publisher. From then on, it took a few months to complete the whole 64 chapters. They were all about the same length but some dealt only with one person and in others I grouped a few together according to a category. And, of course, there was a little about my personal background and experiences with each of those people.

5) What can we expect to find in your books?

Nothing but the truth, so long as it's positive. I have never senselessly gossiped about any of my writing subjects, but I've told about the things they like to collect and activities they like to participate in.

6) What would you say is the most interesting thing about being a writer?

Meeting new people, learning new things, and exchanging ideas.

7) Do you have a website, blog etc, where readers can find you?

No. In the past, writing was my work and I got paid for it. I haven't gotten around to just putting my thoughts out for free. But perhaps I will in the future. It might be fun.

8) Is there anything else you'd like to add?

I have my mother (long deceased) to thank for my love of books and reading. There is a poem that ends "Richer than I you can never be. I had a mother who read to me." That expresses my thinking exactly. To me, acquiring a new book is like Christmas all over again. Long live the printed page. I prefer the real thing in my hands rather than any new inventions.

We would like to thank Shirley for taking the time to speak with us.  You can order a copy of her book from our website:

SHEDDING LIGHT ON THE HOLLYWOOD BLACKLIST: CONVERSATIONS WITH PARTICIPANTS by Stanley Dyrector

Here is a snippet of what the review says:

"Dyrector’s inquisitive interviews with people like Abraham Polonsky, Jeff Corey, Marsha Hunt, John Randolph, and many others reveal the heartbreaking struggle these people endured and how they made it through the suffering. They kept their honor and dignity and emerged intact, sadder but wiser."

New Book - ADVENTURES IN HOLLYWOOD: A MEMOIR

We are pleased to announce the forthcoming release of ADVENTURES IN HOLLYWOOD: A MEMOIR by Bob Koster.

ADVENTURES IN HOLLYWOOD: A MEMOIR by Bob Koster

Bob Koster was born in Hollywood and worked for 35 years in the movie industry, spanning the time from the Studio System to the current spate of Independent filmmakers.  He worked in various phases of production but mainly in the production department as an Assistant Director and a Unit Production Manager.

He worked with some of the most famous directors and actors of their time.  His insights and comments on these films and the characters involved are fascinating, and told as seen through the eyes of a child of the times.

Bob’s father was a famous film director so he was raised in an atmosphere of glamour and drama, but he was also distant enough from it to be able to keep an interesting perspective on the fascinating circus surrounding him.  An absorbing read for anyone interested in cinema history and the backstage activities surrounding the great films.

Book of the Week - Shedding Light on the Hollywood Blacklist

This week's featured book is SHEDDING LIGHT ON THE HOLLYWOOD BLACKLIST: CONVERSATIONS WITH PARTICIPANTS by Stanley Dyrector.

SHEDDING LIGHT ON THE HOLLYWOOD BLACKLIST: CONVERSATIONS WITH PARTICIPANTS by Stanley Dyrector

What Really Happened

There were terrible crimes committed against greatly talented American citizens by overzealous and unconscionable government actions. Meet the victims inside this book. See for yourself what happened to the innocent, what they went through, how they coped with their persecution, and how they survived the aftermath with their chins up, in dignity.

“Congratulations Stanley Dyrector...WAVE AWARDS... Video Excellence Award presented for Community Media in Santa Fe, New Mexico on November 9, 2001, The Stanley Dyrector Show: The Hollywood Blacklist...”

“Dyrector has encountered countless people that help Hollywood sparkle but never get a chance to shine...Screenwriters on the Hollywood Blacklist in the 50's denied work due to their politics...” – Debra Beyer, Los Angeles Times, May 9, 2006.

"...I'm not afraid to be corrected by a guest, or to tell them I love them!"...Dyrector explored the blacklisting period of Hollywood during the McCarthy era...”  California Seniors Weekly (2000)

...Stanley Dyrector takes readers back to a time when freedom of speech was halted or non-existent. Some might say that when defending those that you felt were not guilty would cast guilt upon yourself. A great book with outstanding interviews, and books that I would love to read - and interviewees if alive I would love to have on my own radio show....This is a must read for everyone....This book gets FIVE GOLD LISTS as does the Foreword by Edward Asner. -- Fran Lewis, Reviewer

About the Author
Stanley Dyrector was born in Brooklyn, New York. Beginning his career as an actor, he switched to writing, where he found much success. His TV writing credits include such popular shows as Wagon Train and Slattery’s People. He and his wife, Joyce, teamed up and wrote for daytime TV soaps on ABC, as well as hour radio dramas and comedies for Sears Radio Theatre and Mutual Radio Theatre. Dyrector’s 2-act Vietnam-era play, A Pelican of the Wilderness, was deemed by LA Times critic John Mahoney as “Outstanding.”  His award-winning interview show called The Stanley Dyrector Show can be seen in various locales and on the Internet.
