Philip J. Riley interview

an excerpt from Marilyn Knowlden's new book

Saturday, September 4: When Marilyn took her seat for an early morning silent film, the MC announced “Ladies and Gentlemen, we’ve just been joined by Marilyn Knowlden.” Applause followed, and Marilyn waved appreciatively to the audience.
Sunday, September 5: Bob Birchard met Marilyn at the entrance to the Cocktail Party: He shocked her with “Marilyn, you’re receiving an award tonight, but we’ll have to have it engraved and mailed to you later.” Later, to Marilyn’s surprise, film star Marsha Hunt was her presenter as Marilyn received a Cinecon Lifetime Career Achievement award. Marsha pointed out Marilyn’s depth since, in addition to acting, she had written the book, music and lyrics for three musicals which had actually been produced.
In Marilyn’s acceptance speech, she noted how pleased her father would have been with her award, since his goal was for her to be in high-class movies. She also remembered how her father had put an ad in a trade publication with her picture and the caption “ Little Girl in Big Pictures” – and noted that is the title of her coming book, to be released in a month or two.
Marilyn recalled how in making the film Les Miserables, whenever Director Richard Boleslavsky was pleased with her work as Little Cosette, he would say, “Marilyn, that deserves a Big Black Cigar!” When the film was completed, the director announced it was time for her to receive her cigars and presented her with a long floral box filled with a dozen skewer-reinforced chocolate cigars with hand-painted cigar-bands!” The 150 $85.a seat banquet crowd was full of film stars and industry big-wigs as Marilyn told them: “Tonight I feel like I just received another box of Big Black Cigars!”
Master of Ceremonies Stan Taffel concluded with “Marilyn is the only person in the whole world who in the 1930’s appeared in six films nominated by the Academy as Best Picture of the Year. And, Marilyn, get that book out!”
